Every meeting with Slovakia carries weight beyond the scoreline. The two under-17 sides trace back to the same federation before 1993, and their fixtures are still called the "Federal Derby" or, more warmly, the "Brotherly Derby" — a label that outlasted the split it commemorates.

The Czech Republic under-17 side has never lifted the European title, but it has twice come within a match of it. In 2000, playing as an under-16 team, it lost the final to Portugal 1–2 after extra time. Six years later, now competing at under-17 level, it led Russia twice in the final in 2006 before conceding a late equaliser to finish 2–2, then lost the shoot-out 5–3. That 2006 squad is remembered less for the defeat than for what came after: Tomáš Necid finished the tournament as top scorer, and teammates including Tomáš Pekhart, Marek Štěch and Jan Polák went on to senior international careers. A fourth-place finish in 1999 and quarter-final runs in 1995 and 2024 fill out the record without matching that near-miss.

At the FIFA U-17 World Cup, appearances have been rarer and shorter: a group-stage exit in 2011, then a Round of 32 finish in 2025.

The squad trains at the Youth Training Center Strahov, part of the old Strahov Stadium grounds in Prague and run by Sparta Praha, which also houses the Czech Football Association's headquarters. Matches themselves are spread across grounds around the country, since the team keeps no single home venue.

It began, as the fixture list still recalls, on 3 January 1994 in Ráckeve, Hungary, where a newly independent Czech side lost 2–0 to Italy in its first official outing.
