«Fighting Scots»
That history stretches back to 1889, when the Fighting Scots opened their program with a 48-0 win over Denison and went on to beat Ohio State 64-0 the following year, taking all seven games across their first two seasons. College President Sylvester H. Scovel put a stop to it in 1891, banning intercollegiate sport over concerns about rowdy behaviour among the players, and Wooster went without varsity football for a decade before the game returned in 1901.
The Fighting Scots built their identity in the Ohio Athletic Conference, which they joined that year and stayed in until 1983, and it was there that they strung together an extraordinary run: outright conference champions in four separate seasons between 1916 and 1934, with shared titles either side of that stretch in 1959 and 1970.
They play at John P. Papp Stadium, holding around 4,500, in the black, gold and maroon that have carried the Fighting Scots name through both eras.
