Ghaz Al Shamal

Kirkuk has no shortage of local pride to fight over, and Ghaz Al Shamal's oldest quarrel runs against Al-Jolan, the other club from the city; when the two meet, it is called the Kirkuk Derby, and there is a second edge to that rivalry against Al-Naft Al-Shamal, the North Oil club, sharpest on the basketball court but felt on the football pitch too.

The club grew out of the North Gas Company and the oil fields north of Kirkuk, which is where both the founding and the name come from; Ghaz Al Shamal, North Gas, has carried that industrial identity since 2004 without ever settling on a nickname of its own. For most of its history it sat in the Iraqi Second Division and First Division.

That changed in the 2024–25 season, when the men's team finished runners-up in the First Division and went up to the Iraqi Stars League.

Home matches belong to the Kirkuk Olympic Stadium, though rehabilitation work there has sent the team to Nawroz Stadium in the meantime. The Olympic Stadium holds 25,000.
