Gossau

Gossau sits in Canton St. TSV Fortitudo Gossau began in 1945, when a group of gymnasts inside the Fortitudo gymnastics club started a handball section of their own; the nickname "Forti" has stuck to it ever since. Red and black have been the club's colours from the start.

Fortitudo has never reached the Swiss Cup final or the top-flight Nationalliga A title, and its closest brush with the elite came in the 2017/18 season, when it went out in the quarter-finals. What the club has built instead is a record of getting itself promoted: a 1. Liga championship in 2000/01, repeated in 2002/03, then two Nationalliga B titles, in 2004/05 and 2007/08, each one earning a place in the top division. A promotion in that latter year is also where a common mix-up comes from — some accounts date the club's founding to 2008, when in fact that was simply the year Forti went up.

Staying there has proved harder than getting there. The club came back down from the Nationalliga A in 2019, and by 2023 it had slipped further, out of the Nationalliga B and back into the 1. Liga it once won twice over.
