Guastatoya

Some fixtures in Guatemala carry more weight because of geography, not history. Guastatoya's match against Sanarate FC is one of them: both clubs come from the department of El Progreso, and the meeting is known simply as the Derby of El Progreso.

The club itself formed in 1990 and went through a reorganisation in 2005, when it took the name Club Deportivo Guastatoya. For most of that time it played the role of a provincial side against Guatemala City's bigger names. That changed between 2018 and 2020, when Guastatoya won three national titles in the space of two and a half years — the Clausura and Apertura of 2018, then the Apertura of 2020 — and added the Campeón de Campeones in 2019. Two runner-up finishes, in the 2015 and 2017 Clausura tournaments, had come before that, against Antigua GFC and Municipal.

The run also carried Guastatoya further than any Guatemalan club had gone in the CONCACAF League: a semi-final in 2021.
