Cobán Imperial

On matchday in Cobán, the count of 15,000 seats at Estadio José Ángel Rossi tells only part of the story. The stadium sits in a valley, and the hills ringing it fill with people who never pass a turnstile — watching for free from above, until the crowd swells past the official capacity toward 40,000 or even 50,000. It is the hillside spectators, as much as the paying ones, that visitors remember.

The club itself started somewhere plainer. Founded on 1 August 1924, it began life as Magisterio de Cobán, a team tied to the local teachers' college, working through Guatemala's lower divisions for decades. The break came in 1960, when the standard of its football and the state of its own ground earned it an invitation into the Liga Mayor. It took the field in the top flight under its new name, Cobán Imperial, with Eduardo "Mondongo" Guzmán as its first coach at that level.

Its supporters are known simply as Cobaneros. Two league titles carry the club's history in the top division: the Clausura of 2004, and then nothing until the Apertura of 2022, eighteen years later. None of it comes easily against Deportivo Zacapa, the opponent in what is called the Clásico del Norte, a fixture that draws on the rivalry between the two towns as much as the two teams.
