The club began in 1934 as the football section of the multi-sport Valkeakosken Haka, split off as its own body, FC Haka ry, in 1991, and was restructured into the joint-stock FC Haka Oy in 2008 after financial trouble threatened to sink it.

Nine league titles and twelve cup wins followed across the decades, the championships spread from 1960 through to 2004 and the cups from 1955 to 2005. The regional rival is Ilves of Tampere, and the meetings between the two are known as the Pirkanmaa derby; Tampere United, once a fixture on the other side of that rivalry, folded in 2017.

Olli Huttunen kept goal for Haka from 1978 to 1995, played 432 matches, and stayed on afterwards as coach and later chief executive. Valeri Popovitch arrived later and became the club's all-time top scorer with 170 league goals between 1994 and 2008; his number 14 has not been worn since.

The team still plays in black and white at Tehtaan kenttä, the "factory field" that holds 3,516 seated spectators, with the supporters who follow them known as the Hakapeliitat.
