Fin Bartels and Hauke Wahl came through this system, and Fabian Reese followed the same route before moving on; Ikem Ugoh is the most recent name to sign a professional contract, in 2024.

The senior side traces back to 1900, when it was founded as Kieler Fußball-Verein, before a 1917 merger produced the club as it stands today.

Where the first team fills the 15,000-capacity Holstein-Stadion, the U19s play at the Citti-Fußballpark in Kiel-Projensdorf, a ground built for a few thousand rather than tens of thousands. It has been enough to host two regional wins: the SHFV-Pokal, Schleswig-Holstein's own cup, taken in 2018/19 and again in 2021/22.

Sunday afternoons at that level are sized to the region, and the fixtures that matter most are the ones against Hamburg. Games with Hamburger SV U19 and, above all, FC St. Pauli U19 carry the weight of a north German derby, referred to locally as the Nordderby — the closest thing this age group has to a rivalry with any history behind it.
