Horoya

Conakry's football landscape in the 1970s ran through military and workers' clubs, and Horoya AC took its name from the Guinean word for liberty when it was formed in 1975. Within three years the club had already reached beyond Guinea, lifting the African Cup Winners' Cup in 1978.

Domestically Horoya has come to define the league: 22 national championships, a run that stretches from the late 1980s through to the current decade, with an unbroken stretch of titles from 2015 to 2022. That dominance sits alongside nine Guinée Coupe Nationale wins and five Super Cups, and it has made the fixture against Hafia FC, played out as "le derby du championnat guinéen," a defining rivalry.

The club plays in red and white and carries the nickname Les Matamkas, taken from the Stade Matam, another name for their ground, the Stade du 28 Septembre. Continentally, the squad has pushed into the CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals and reached the CAF Champions League quarter-finals in back-to-back campaigns.

Horoya's academy, the Académie de Football Antonio Souaré, has become the club's clearest link to the wider game: Naby Keïta started here before his move to Liverpool, and in 2023 alone eleven academy graduates were promoted into the first-team squad.
