About

The Guinée Championnat National stands as the premier football competition in Guinea. Commonly known as Ligue 1 Pro, it serves as the highest level in the national pyramid. The league sits above Ligue 2 and various regional divisions, forming the core of professional football in the country.

Founded in 1965 by the Guinean Football Federation (FEGUIFOOT), the tournament replaced a series of district-based matches. It transitioned to full professional status during a significant reform around 2011. The current structure includes 14 clubs competing in a single round-robin group. Each side plays every opponent twice, creating a 26-match schedule. The champion is decided by total points, with goal difference and goals scored serving as tie-breakers.

Historical dominance has shifted between elite clubs over the decades. Horoya AC holds the record with 22 titles, while Hafia FC follows with 16. AS Kaloum Star has claimed 13 victories. Horoya AC particularly dominated the modern era, securing consecutive titles from 2015 to 2022 and again in 2024–25. Milo FC broke this streak in the 2023–24 season, winning their first-ever title. Hafia FC’s own period of control spanned from 1966 to 1979.

The league provides a pathway to international competition. The winner qualifies for the CAF Champions League. This stands in contrast to the Coupe de Guinée, the primary domestic cup, whose winner enters the CAF Confederation Cup. Promotion and relegation are standard, with the bottom two teams dropping to Ligue 2 and the top two rising. These rules have occasionally been modified due to restructuring or external factors. The competition has also endured suspensions, including a period between 1973 and 1977 caused by political instability. Sponsorship deals have changed the official name, such as Ligue 1 Rio Tinto and the current Ligue 1 Guicopres.
