Afrique Football Élite

Finals in Bamako tend to run through Stade Malien, and it was Stade Malien who stood in the way in May 2024, when Afrique Football Élite reached the final of the Coupe du Mali for the first time in the club's history. They lost that final, the 63rd edition of the competition, and it remains the closest the club has come to a major trophy.

The club is built differently from most of its Ligue 1 rivals in the first place. Everyone in Bamako calls it Les Académiciens, a nickname that describes what it actually does: AFE runs as a football academy first, a competing club second, developing young players rather than assembling a squad to chase results. It reached the top flight only in 2021, promoted out of the Bamako district league, and Baye Ba took over as coach that same March.

Home games are played at the Stade Mamadou Konaté in Commune III, a ground with a longer history than the club that now uses it. Built in 1954 and known for years as the Stade de Ntomikorobougou, then Stade Bouvier, it was renovated in 2009 and now sits on artificial turf, with a handball court and a basketball court built into the same site.

AFE has also taken part in the Africa Challenge Cup, competing there for a third time, a sign of the academy's ambitions beyond the domestic league even without a Malian title to its name yet.

The Stade Mamadou Konaté holds 5,500 people.
