Bakaridjan

Barouéli sits some way from Mali's football centres, and the club that grew from it in 1989 built its reputation less on results than on production. Young players pass through the Académie Jean-Marc Guillou before arriving at AS Bakaridjan, a pipeline that has kept the side supplied even in seasons when the trophy cabinet stayed bare.

Home games are played some distance away, at Stade Amary Daou in Ségou, which holds 15,000. The arrangement says something about the club's standing in the region: Barouéli itself does not host the fixtures that carry its name.

There is no fixture here with a name attached to it, no derby fought over decades. What rivalry exists is regional rather than historic — matches against AS Biton and Renaissance AC, both drawn from the same stretch of the Ségou Region, played with the familiarity of clubs that keep running into each other rather than any single grudge passed down between them.
