Bougouni sits in the Sikasso Region. That changed once three local sides, AS Tadona, AS Balanzan and AS Banimonotié, merged in 2009 to form a single club.

The merger paid off in 2012, when US Bougouni won the Coupe du Mali, beating AS Onze Créateurs de Niaréla 2-1 in the final. It also opened the door to continental football: the following year the club entered the CAF Confederation Cup, though it went out in the first round. A runners-up finish in the Supercoupe du Mali came the same year as the cup triumph.

Home games are played at the Stade Omnisports de Bougouni, known locally as Stade Moussa Diakité, in front of a capacity of 4,500. Supporters and players go by the nickname Les Bougounikas.

US Bougouni now competes in the Malian Première Division.
