Hamed Haddadi's number 15 was retired by the Islamic Republic of Iran Basketball Federation in 2025: the first Iranian to play in the NBA, and the man named most valuable player at four separate FIBA Asia Cup wins, in 2007, 2009, 2013 and 2017. Those four titles are the spine of Iran's basketball record, taken under four different coaches — Rajko Toroman, Veselin Matić, Memi Bečirovič and Andrej Lemanis.

The federation goes back to 1945. Team Melli's first international outing came on 1 August 1948, against France at the London Olympics, where they finished 14th — still their best Olympic placing after later appearances in 2008 and 2020. At the World Cup they have never gone beyond 19th, reached in 2010. Three Asian Games bronzes, in 1951, 2006 and 2010, then silver in 2014 and 2018.
