Istanbul GSK grew out of the youth and sports directorate for the city, set up in 1995 to run boxing, swimming and gymnastics before handball and volleyball were added under the same roof.

The team trains and plays out of the THF Serdar Seymen Handball Hall in Beykoz, a 1,500-seat venue on the Bosphorus side of the city; some fixtures have instead gone to the Haldun Alagaş Sports Complex across in Ümraniye. The club's colours — black, red and white — are set out in its statutes, and its badge carries an image of the 15 July Martyrs Bridge, the crossing better known simply as the Bosphorus Bridge.

Mesut Ilgın took over as head coach for the debut Super Lig campaign, working alongside sporting director Akın Yenigün to assemble a squad built around goalkeeper Burak Turan and Nikola Arsenic in the outfield positions. The roster has yet to win any silverware a year into top-flight handball.
