JOS Watergraafsmeer

In April 2014, temporary stands went up around pitch 8 at Sportpark Drieburg to take the crowd past 4,000, and Ajax came to Watergraafsmeer to play a KNVB Beker third-round tie against the club named after that very neighbourhood. JOS won its opener 2–1 against VV Noordwijk to reach that stage, then lost 0–9. The scoreline mattered less than the fact of the fixture: a feeder side, on its own suburban ground, hosting the professional club it had spent decades supplying with players.

That relationship runs deeper than a single cup night. Rinus Michels managed JOS between 1960 and 1964, years before he built the Ajax and Netherlands sides that carried his name into football's vocabulary, and took the club to the Eerste Klasse title in 1962–63. Players including Ruud Suurendonk, Johnny Beun, Jos Dijkstra and Ab Parree passed through JOS on their way to professional careers, which also explains why the Amsterdam derby against Ajax still sits at the centre of the club's list of rivals alongside AGB and SV Zeeburgia.

The current club is itself a merger: JOS, formed on 7 February 1920 as the Jeugd Organisatie Sportclub, combined with Watergraafsmeer on 1 July 1995 to take the name it carries now. Watergraafsmeer had its own layered past, assembled from six earlier clubs including Amstel, dating to 1905.

Since returning to the Sunday Eerste Klasse A in 2014 and reaching the Hoofdklasse again in 2019, JOS has stayed an amateur-level side with no senior honour beyond regional and district level to show for that production line of Ajax talent.
