Ka Thor Women

ÍBV brings the sharpest edge in the playoffs, and matches against Valur and Fram carry their own weight — the kind of fixtures where KA/Þór's away support to Akureyri or a trip south settles nothing until the final whistle. That rivalry sits at the centre of a project built from two clubs rather than one: Knattspyrnufélag Akureyrar and Íþróttafélagið Þór put their handball sides together in 1999, keeping red for KA and blue for Þór in the shared strip. The men's side split the arrangement apart in 2017; the women kept it going.

The top flight has not always had them. KA/Þór dropped out of the Úrvalsdeild kvenna in 2012 and spent years working back, winning the second-tier 1. deild kvenna in 2018 to force a return. What followed changed the club's standing in Icelandic handball: the Super Cup in 2020, then both the league title and the Icelandic Cup in 2021, a double that came inside three years of promotion. Martha Hermannsdóttir was named MVP of that 2021 playoff run, while Rut Arnfjörð Jónsdóttir has carried the individual honours further, taking the Icelandic Player of the Year award.

Home games are played at KA-heimilið, on Dalsbraut in Akureyri, in front of a ground that holds 1,200 — small enough that a packed house against ÍBV or Valur is felt rather than just counted.
