«Loggers»
In 1923 the university in Tacoma stopped being the Grizzlies. The football team was not new when it took the name. It had been playing since at least 1894, six years after the university itself opened in 1888, and the 1903 side had already claimed the Northwest Collegiate Football Championship.
The Loggers share Tacoma with Pacific Lutheran University. Both schools are in the same city, so the meeting is billed as Lutes vs. Loggers. Puget Sound plays in NCAA Division III, in the Northwest Conference, in maroon and white. The Hatchet is the official symbol.
The Loggers' most notable season came in 1949 under head coach John P. Heinrick. They finished 7-1, with a 5-1 record in conference play, and took an Evergreen Conference championship.
Al Roberts, of the Class of 1969, later coached in the NFL and was inducted into the Logger Athletics Hall of Fame in 2025.
In the 1950s the Loggers won .705 of their games.
