The club's roots run through Ballspielverein Vorwärts 1919 Lübeck, though the entity that exists today was formed on 20 September 1945, when former members of BSV Vorwärts and SV Polizei Lübeck merged into one. The founding date the club recognises, 1919, belongs to the earlier side rather than the postwar one.

Green and white, the Grün-Weißen have spent the bulk of their modern history a division below where a club of their pedigree might expect, punctuated by four Regionalliga Nord titles — 1995, 2002, 2020 and 2023 — and a run to the semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal in 2003/04.
