Macaé

The ground in Macaé carries a man's name before it carries a scoreline: Cláudio Moacyr de Azevedo, known to everyone simply as "Moacyrzão". Built for 15,000, it has stood since 2023 under a reduced limit of 4,700 after damage was found in the stands, and the club has played on regardless.

The team itself started under someone else's identity. Founded on 17 July 1990, it took the field first as Botafogo Futebol Clube, borrowing the name of Rio's grand old club, before becoming Macaé Sports in 1999 and settling, in 2000, on Macaé Esporte Futebol Clube. White and blue have stayed constant throughout, and the nickname that stuck is Alvianil Praiano.

2014 remains the year the club points to. Macaé won the Campeonato Brasileiro Série C, its only national title, and rode that form into Série B the following season. The stay lasted one campaign: they finished bottom of Série B in 2015, slid back to Série C, dropped again to Série D in 2017, and have played only at state level since 2018. The 1998 Carioca Série C title and three runner-up finishes in the Carioca second division belong to the years before that rise, not after it.

What has endured through the promotions and relegations is the Derby Macaense, the fixture against Serra Macaense that still draws the sharpest interest around the ground on Moacyrzão's reduced terraces.
