Perez Zeledon

The Estadio Municipal Keylor Navas Gamboa holds 6,000 people, a modest bowl by Costa Rican standards, and it carries the name of a goalkeeper who grew up in the city and went on to play in the Champions League final and at the World Cup. The stadium was renamed for him while he was still an active player for Real Madrid, an honour handed to a hometown son rather than a retired legend.

San Isidro de El General sits inland, away from the capital's football corridor, and the club built there has gone by more than one name over the decades. The current Municipal Pérez Zeledón took shape from a merger between A.D. Generaleña and A.D. Pérez Zeledón, and the celeste that once sat alongside blue and white on the shirt faded out of the kit after the two sides became one.

Two Aperturas define what the club has actually won. In 2004, Pérez Zeledón beat Saprissa 1-0 to take that short tournament, though the fuller season crown slipped away to Alajuelense on aggregate in the final. The 2017 Apertura carried no such asterisk: a final victory over Herediano gave the Guerreros del Sur a title with nothing to qualify it.

Herediano is the name that recurs when Pérez Zeledón's history turns toward silverware, and a rivalry with San Carlos has grown out of geography, two provincial clubs from outside the capital region facing off with the kind of needle that never quite reaches the intensity of a Saprissa–Alajuelense derby, but means just as much locally.
