Petrolul Ploiești

Ilie Oană managed the side to one of its championships, and decades later the club fixed his name to the ground it still calls home — a stadium on the edge of Ploiești that holds just over 15,000 people.

It began in Bucharest, not Ploiești, on 31 December 1924, when Triumf and Romcomit merged into a side called Juventus București. Under that name it won its first Romanian championship in 1929–30. What followed was two decades of the club being renamed to match whichever state enterprise happened to run it: Distribuția, Petrolul, Competrol, Partizanul, Flacăra, each version still playing in the capital. Only in March 1952 did the club move to Ploiești itself, taking the name Flacăra Ploiești. A further switch to Energia Ploiești lasted a single season before the club settled, in 1957, on the name it has carried ever since — with one brief exception in 1992–93, when it played as FC Ploiești before reverting.

The championships that followed the move came in 1958, 1959 and 1966, adding to the 1930 title won back in Bucharest. Three Cupa României wins, in 1963, 1995 and 2013, filled out the trophy case, though two Supercupa finals, in 1995 and 2013, were both lost. Rapid București has long been treated as the club's fiercest rival, a fixture known locally as the Unicul derbi. None of that history stopped the club going bankrupt in 2015, forcing a full dissolution and restart.

Through it all, one name outlasted the club's own changes: Mircea Dridea, still remembered as its top scorer, with 141 goals for a side that spent much of its life trying to work out what to call itself.
