About

Liga I, operating under the Superbet-sponsored title Superliga, represents the highest level of Romanian professional football. Administered by the Liga Profesionistă de Fotbal, the league occupies Level 1 of the national pyramid. Its origins stretch back to 1909, though the modern structure began in 1932 as Divizia A before adopting its current name in 2006. The competition differs from the national cup because it crowns the domestic champion and allocates a UEFA Champions League berth, while the knockout tournament awards a Europa League spot. The current format features 16 clubs competing in a regular season where every team plays twice. After this phase, the table splits into two distinct groups. The top six enter the Championship Play-offs, while the remaining ten face off in the Relegation Play-outs. A unique aspect of this system involves halving points at the start of the split phase and discarding goal difference for tie-breaking decisions within these stages. Relegation sees the bottom two sides drop directly to Liga II, while the 13th and 14th teams enter a two-legged playoff against second-tier challengers. This structure ensures intense competition throughout the campaign. Historically, FCSB stands as the most successful entity with 28 titles, followed by Dinamo București with 18 and CFR Cluj with eight. The league has undergone several structural changes, including the transition from regional championships to a unified national league in 1921–22. These reforms shaped the competitive landscape that exists today. The administrative body continues to oversee the professional aspect of the sport, ensuring standards are met across all participating clubs.
