About

The Liga 1 Feminin stands as the premier women's football competition in Romania. Organised by the Romanian Football Federation, the league operates at Level 1 of the national pyramid. It began in 1990, with the inaugural official season taking place the following year after the Cupa Libertatea tournament.

Over the decades, the competition has undergone several rebrandings. It functioned as Liga I between 2006 and 2013 before becoming Superliga until 2017. The current naming structure was reintroduced in 2017. The format features a single round-robin regular season followed by a split phase. The top four teams enter a double round-robin Championship play-off to decide the title and UEFA Women's Champions League qualification spots. Meanwhile, the bottom four compete in a Relegation play-off. Two places are lost to Liga II Feminin each season, with winners from the second tier gaining direct promotion.

Universitatea Olimpia Cluj holds the record for success in the competition. The club has secured twelve titles, including a remarkable run of twelve consecutive championships stretching from 2011–12 to 2022–23. In the most recent completed campaign, Farul Constanța claimed the 2024–25 title. A unique historical event occurred in 2019–20 when the season was halted by the pandemic and declared void, resulting in no champion or relegations for that year.

The current roster includes Csikszereda MC, Farul Constanța Women, Fc Rapid Bucuresti Women, Gloria Bistrița-Năsăud, Olimpia Cluj, and SSU Poli Timişoara Women. The league remains distinct from the men's equivalent through its specific branding and structural adjustments for a smaller participant base.
