About

Liga II serves as the second tier of Romanian football, sitting directly below the top-flight Liga I and above Liga III. Founded in 1934, the competition was originally known as Divizia B for seven decades before the Romanian Football Federation rebranded the tiers in 2006 to align with European naming conventions. Since the 2019–20 season, it has operated under the sponsored name Liga II Casa Pariurilor.

The league features a single national division comprising 22 teams, an expansion from the previous 20-team format. This structure replaced a system of multiple regional series introduced during a major reform in 2016–17, aiming to reduce travel costs and centralise competition. The regular season follows a single round-robin format, after which the competition splits into distinct phases. The top six teams enter a promotion play-off featuring a double round-robin to determine the two sides promoted directly to Liga I. Meanwhile, the third and fourth-placed teams face a two-legged playoff against the 13th and 14th placed teams from Liga I for additional promotion opportunities.

The remaining 16 teams are divided into two groups of eight for a relegation play-out, with the bottom two sides from each group dropping to Liga III. This setup differs significantly from its neighbour, Liga I, which utilises a 16-team double-leg regular season and a points-halving system in its post-season splits. Politehnica Timișoara holds the record for the most titles with ten, followed by Jiul Petroșani with eight and CSMS Iași with six. The current champions are FC Argeș Pitești, who secured promotion alongside Csíkszereda Miercurea Ciuc and Metaloglobus București.
