«The Red Dogs»
In 1990, an eighteen-year-old side of the club reached the semi-final of the Cup Winners' Cup, with Mircea Lucescu on the touchline as both a former player and the coach who took them there.
Dinamo București was formed on 14 May 1948, when the interior ministry merged Unirea Tricolor MAI and Ciocanul București into a single club. The ministry connection outlasted the merger itself: the football side was carved out as its own legal entity only in 1992, and the ministry retains a separate, unrelated club, CS Dinamo, whose own football section plays in the lower leagues and dropped from Liga II to Liga III for 2025/26.
The senior team's record reads eighteen league titles, the last coming in 2007, and thirteen domestic cups, the most recent in 2012. Cornel Dinu played 454 matches between 1966 and 1983, more than anyone else in the club's history, while Dudu Georgescu scored 207 league goals in the following decade, a tally that still stands as the club's benchmark. Between 2013 and 2017 the club ran through ownership changes and insolvency, and reorganised as SC Dinamo 1948 SA to keep playing. The drop came fully in 2022/23, when Dinamo went down to Liga II for the first time in its history, before returning to the top flight in 2023.
Home matches against FCSB are still called the Eternal Derby, a fixture that has run since before either club carried its current name. The old Stadionul Dinamo, opened in 1952, is out of use while it is rebuilt, so the team has played its home fixtures since 2021 at the Arcul de Triumf Stadium, which holds just over 8,000, moving to the Arena Națională for matches that draw a bigger crowd. The white and red colours, and the "Red Dogs" nickname, have carried through every version of the club since 1948.
