The 2018/19 season ended with FK Pohronie champions of the 2. liga, and headed for the first time into the Fortuna Liga. A merger club had reached the top flight.

Žiar nad Hronom got the club's name on 1 June 2012, but the playing squad that took the field first belonged to TJ Sokol Dolná Ždaňa, a side founded in 1929 in a village outside town. The youth structure came from the other side of the merger, FK Žiar nad Hronom, which had built eleven junior teams since 1966. Neither predecessor survived the deal as such; what took the field under the new name.

The debut season in the top flight, 2019/20, held: Pohronie stayed up. It did not last. In 2021/22 the club finished bottom of the Fortuna Liga and dropped back to the 2. liga, then returned to the top division and settled into mid-table, finishing ninth in 2023/24.
