Ángel Cabrera placed an advertisement in the newspaper ABC calling for players, and out of that call came the basketball section of Real Madrid, registered on 22 March 1931 as a division of the football club.
What followed is a run of dominance without real parallel in Spanish basketball: 38 Liga ACB titles, including ten in a row between 1967–68 and 1976–77. In Europe, the club has won the EuroLeague eleven times, a record in the competition, from the 1960s European Champions Cup era through to 2023. Sergio Llull retired in 2025 as the club's all-time leading scorer in the EuroLeague, having spent his whole senior career at the club. Further back, Fernando Martín became the first European player to reach the NBA before returning to Madrid, where his number 10 was retired.
The rivalry with FC Barcelona Bàsquet, played out as El Clásico, has become the fixture by which the domestic season is measured, and Real Madrid's haul of 29 Copa del Rey titles and ten Supercopa ACB wins has largely been built alongside that opposition. Five FIBA Intercontinental Cup wins, most recently in 2015 against Bauru, extended the club's reach beyond Europe.
Home games are played at the Movistar Arena, known for most of its history under other names, with room for 15,000 for basketball.
