ACB (Spain) 2025/26

The Liga ACB, currently known as Liga Endesa for sponsorship reasons, operates as the top-tier professional basketball league in Spain. The competition was established by the Asociación de Clubs de Baloncesto, an association formed by the clubs themselves, to professionalize the sport and gain autonomy from the Spanish Basketball Federation. This move saw clubs break away from the Liga Nacional, which had been organized by the Federation since 1957.

Unlike the semi-closed, license-based EuroLeague, the ACB maintains an open promotion and relegation system with the second division, Primera FEB. Two teams are automatically relegated from the ACB, while two are promoted from the lower tier: the regular-season champion and the winner of a playoff tournament involving teams finishing second through ninth. The league features 19 teams competing in a double round-robin regular season. The top eight teams qualify for the playoffs, which are single-elimination best-of-five series for the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final.

The competition is distinct from other European leagues due to its deep integration with the EuroLeague. Spanish clubs participate in both the ACB and the EuroLeague concurrently. The ACB schedule is designed to accommodate EuroLeague games, which are typically held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, leaving weekends for domestic play. Administratively, the ACB manages the top-tier league and the Copa del Rey, while the Federation retains authority over national teams and lower-tier amateur leagues.

The league has undergone several reforms, including the introduction of the three-point line in 1984 and a shift to four 10-minute periods with a 24-second shot clock in 2000. The league name has changed due to sponsorship over the years. Real Madrid is the most successful club in the history of Spanish basketball with 38 total national titles. FC Barcelona is second with 20 titles. The current champion is Real Madrid, who defeated UCAM Murcia in the finals of the 2023–24 season.
