The competition sits at the third level of the Spanish basketball pyramid, serving as the primary feeder between the second tier and regional fourth-tier leagues. It operates under the governance of the Federación Española de Baloncesto, which restructured the naming convention in 2024 to align with a new hierarchical system. Prior to this change, the tournament was widely known by commercial names including LEB Plata and Adecco Plata. The current structure divides the participating teams into East and West conferences, ensuring a balanced geographic distribution for the regular season.
Advancement to the second tier is determined through a complex promotion system. The winners of each conference face each other in a two-legged final to secure one direct promotion spot. The remaining two places are contested by teams finishing in second through eighth places within their respective groups, who enter a knockout playoff tournament. Conversely, the league sees significant turnover at the bottom, with six teams facing elimination. The two lowest-placed sides in each group are relegated directly to the fourth tier, while those finishing in the middle of the pack enter relegation playoffs. The losers of these matches also drop down to the fourth level.
Historical dominance is shared among several clubs, with Iraurgi SB and CB Tizona standing out as the most successful entries in the competition's history. Each side has claimed two titles, with Iraurgi SB winning during the 2016–17 and 2020–21 seasons, and CB Tizona securing victories in 2005–06 and 2022–23. The current champion, ODILo FC Cartagena, won their first title in the 2023–24 season, marking their ascent to the second tier. This pathway provides a clear route for clubs to progress through the Spanish basketball system, connecting regional play to national competition.
