The Pabellón Lydia Valentín is a municipal sports hall on Calle José Luis Sáez, and the "Ciudad de Ponferrada" in the club's full name marks it as the city's team as much as the building is the city's hall. Club Baloncesto Ciudad de Ponferrada has no fan nickname. People say the full name, or whatever the sponsor's name is that season.

The club began on 22 June 2002 as a replacement. A team called JT had stopped operating, and Ponferrada would otherwise have been left without a basketball side. In 2018-19 it won the Liga EBA Group A-B and went through the promotion phase undefeated, which took it up to LEB Plata. That league has since been renamed Segunda FEB, the third tier of Spanish men's basketball under the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB), and the club is still there.

The blue and white it plays in became a shared identity in July 2022, when the club allied with the football side SD Ponferradina. Since then the team has carried the sponsorship name Clínica Ponferrada SDP.

The most recent trophy came in September 2024, in the Copa Castilla y León de Segunda FEB. The final against Cultural Leonesa was decided in the return leg, and Ponferrada won it 59-58.

The promotion of 2019 and the regional cup of 2024 are the two high points so far.
