Toledo, Ohio, watches its university basketball at Savage Arena, a 9,000-seat building that also hosts concerts and graduation ceremonies. It opened in 1976 as Centennial Hall. On 13 July 1988 it was renamed John F. Savage Hall, after John Savage, a 1952 graduate and strong booster of the university. It is now Savage Arena.
The Rockets' game predates the building by decades. In 1950–51 Bill Walker averaged 7.24 assists a game, the first national season assists leader the NCAA officially recorded.
The team's deepest NCAA Tournament run came in 1979. Stan Joplin's game-winning shot beat Iowa 74–72, and Notre Dame then won the Sweet Sixteen game 79–71. In 1980 the Rockets took their only Mid-American Conference (MAC) tournament title. Only one team in the conference has strung together more titles than Toledo's next run, 2021 to 2024, when the Rockets won four outright regular-season titles in a row. Cincinnati's five straight, from 1947 to 1951, is the only longer streak in MAC history. Ryan Rollins, taken by the Golden State Warriors in the second round of the 2022 NBA Draft, came out of the middle of that run.
Toledo has 12 MAC regular-season titles, and a 1–4 record in the NCAA Tournament.
