Republic of Ireland U17

Fixtures at this level rarely repeat opponents from one cycle to the next, since qualifying groups are redrawn every campaign, so no single U17 rival has had the chance to take root the way one does at senior level. What continuity exists comes from geography: England, Scotland and Northern Ireland turn up more often than most simply by being close by, though a meeting with Northern Ireland stays rare, the two associations rarely sharing a qualifying section.

The side traces its line back to a Republic of Ireland Under-16 team that first took the field on 13 October 1985, drawing 2–2 with Norway, and reached its first major tournament in 1988. When UEFA rebranded the age group in 2002, the Under-17s played their opening fixture that March against Cyprus. The old Under-16 side had already delivered the team's high point: the 1998 UEFA European Under-16 Championship, won with a final victory over Spain. Since the rebrand, Ireland have reached the quarter-finals of the European Under-17 Championship four times, in 1996, 2017, 2018 and 2023, without going further.

2025 opened new ground. Ireland made their first appearance at the FIFA U-17 World Cup, in Qatar, and topped Group J before beating Canada on penalties in the round of 32 — the country's first knockout win at this level on a world stage — and going out to Switzerland in the round of 16.

The squad trains at the FAI National Training Centre in Abbotstown and, for lack of a fixed home, moves between Tallaght Stadium, Richmond Park and the Aviva Stadium. Its production line has mattered more than any of those grounds: Declan Rice, Gavin Bazunu and Troy Parrott all passed through, and Adam Idah left as the age group's all-time top scorer, 14 goals in 22 caps, before going on to the senior team himself.
