RTV Basel

Basel's Kleinbasel district has run gymnastics and sports clubs since the nineteenth century. Black and white settled early as the club's colours, and the nickname Schwarzwyssi has stuck to it ever since.

The championship history sits mostly in the twentieth century: two Swiss league titles, in 1960 and 1984, with the cup added in that same 1984 season to complete a double. Relegation from the top flight in 2013 followed a wretched campaign, two wins from eighteen games, and it took until 2015 for Silvio Wernle, captain turned coach, to lead the side back up. Pascal Stauber was the figure supporters point to from that promotion, a goalkeeper who won 116 caps for Switzerland and gave the club a rare presence on the national scene.

That same season produced something the club had never managed before: a run to the Swiss Cup final, beating Handball Stäfa in extra time along the way before losing to Kadetten Schaffhausen. Against TV Birsfelden and TV Möhlin, the local and regional derbies, the games are billed simply as Derby, and neither side travels to make up the numbers.

Home games are played at the Rankhof-Halle, part of Basel's Sportzentrum Rankhof, in front of no more than 1,500 people.
