The rivalry with SpVgg 07 Ludwigsburg has never needed a trophy to justify it; it is a local derby in the truest sense, two sides from the same stretch of Baden-Württemberg who measure themselves against each other more than against the table. That local identity is the whole point of a club that grew out of a 1973 merger between SGV Heutingsheim and TSV Beihingen, itself carrying forward a line back to a Heutingsheim side founded in 1913.

For decades the senior team's home was the Wasenstadion in Freiberg am Neckar, a 4,000-capacity ground now left to the youth sides after the move to the Frankenstadion in Heilbronn, a switch that came with a new name: SGV Heilbronn-Freiberg. The Oberliga Baden-Württemberg title in 2021/22 sent the first team up to the Regionalliga Südwest, the club's clearest marker of senior progress; two earlier Verbandsliga Württemberg championships, in 2000/01 and 2011/12, and a third in 2016/17, filled in the years before it.

The youth set-up has produced the sharper headlines. The U19 side reached the final of the DFB-Junioren-Vereinspokal in 2004, a run that ended 0-5 against Hertha BSC, and it is that generation's ceiling the club still points to when talking about its academy. Among those who came through it, Tim Leibold is the name that carried furthest, a product of the Freiberg youth ranks who went on to build a career well beyond it — the sort of departure a club this size measures itself by.
