Every South Jutland fixture against TM Tønder Håndbold carries the name Sydderby: Tønder's own club, TM Tønder, was the licence-holder that first carried the region's elite handball project before withdrawing it in 2006 and forcing SønderjyskE to rebuild from the 3rd Division.

The men's side reached the Herre Handbold Ligaen in 2010–11, having climbed from the 2nd Division to the 1st three seasons earlier, and has stayed there since largely by escaping relegation.

Frederik Børm spent five seasons at pivot, from 2015 to 2020, in a period when the club's identity was still bound up with SønderjyskE Elitesport, the multi-sport organisation formed in 2004 to bring the region's top teams under one banner. That arrangement ended on 1 July 2024, when a group of local investors in Sønderborg bought the handball team outright, keeping the name, the badge and the colours but running it apart from the wider club.

Matches at Sydjysk Sparekasse Skansen hold 2,000, split between 1,000 fixed seats and another 1,000 on extendable side stands.
