«Statesmen»
Long before anyone called them the Statesmen, the football team that Hobart and William Smith Colleges put on the field in Geneva, New York, played under a different name: the Deacons. That side first took the field in 1891, and the colleges settled on Statesmen in 1936.
The series has run through multiple shares of the conference crown: Hobart split the title with Union in 2006, with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute the following year, and again with Rensselaer in 2024.
Home games are played at Boswell Field, part of David J. Urick Stadium, which holds 3,000 spectators. The Statesmen wear purple and orange.
Strip away the conference banners and what remains is the same thing that began it all: a college football team taking the field in Geneva in 1891, under a name its current players would not recognise.
