Sunrise

Nyagatare sits in Rwanda's Eastern Province, and until 2022 the district's football club played on borrowed grounds while its own stadium went up around it. Sunrise FC only arrived there in 2016, transplanted from Rwamagana. The club's history still runs through the place it left: the Eastern Province derby against Rwamagana City FC, contested against the club Sunrise's own roots trace back to.

The new ground, Golgotha Stadium, opened in July 2022 with President Paul Kagame in attendance, and Sunrise marked the occasion by beating APR FC 2-0 in the inauguration match. It holds about 1,000 people.

On the field, the closest Sunrise came to silverware was the 2017-18 Rwandan Cup, where wins over Miroplast, Espoir and Bugesera carried them to the semi-finals before Rayon Sports, the eventual champions, ended the run over two legs. A third-place defeat to APR FC left them fourth. The following season produced the club's signature individual moment: Nigerian forward Samson Babuwa finished as the 2019/20 Rwanda Premier League's top scorer, and in October 2019 Sunrise beat the reigning champions Rayon Sports 2-1 at home under coach Moses Basena, the former Uganda Cranes manager. Relegation to the Second Division followed around 2021-22, and by late 2023 the team was working to climb back under Jackson Mayanja.

None of that has dimmed the derby with Rwamagana City, even as the district rivalry with Nyagatare FC gives the club a second, more local score to settle.
