Tertnes Håndball Elite Women

They needed one more win in the spring of 2000 to bring the EHF Cup to Bergen for the first time. Tertnes had beaten the odds to reach the final, only to run into El Ferrobus Mislata: 24-22 away, then 19-18 at home, the aggregate slipping away by a single goal. It remains the closest the club has come to a European trophy.

Domestically the story reads much the same way. Tertnes has never lifted the Norwegian championship or the Norwegian Cup, yet it has stood on the podium often enough to make that absence conspicuous: silver in 1998/99, 2003/04 and again in 2024/25, bronze on nine separate occasions between 2001/02 and 2018/19. Two cup finals, in 2001/02 and 2016, ended the same way the European one did.

What the club has produced instead is players. Cecilie Leganger went from Tertnes's goal to being named the world's best in 2001; Sakura Hauge left Bergen for a career that took her into Japan's national team. The pattern has held since — Larvik and Vipers Kristiansand have both drawn talent out of the same production line, most recently around a captain in Birgitte Karlsen Hagen and a scorer in Henriette Sognæs carrying the current side.

Since 2021 those matches have been played at Åsane Arena, after decades at Haukelandshallen. With a league medal added again last season, the club remains without a domestic title.
