It belongs to HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, and the ownership shows up in the fixture list: the sharpest of its rivalries is with Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors , another club under the same corporate roof, in a meeting known as the Hyundai Derby. The other is closer to home in every sense — Pohang Steelers , a short way up the same coastline, in the East Coast Derby.
The ground came late.
What the club has built there arrived in bursts. In between sat the continental work. Ulsan took the AFC Champions League in 2012, beating Al-Ahli 3–0, and again in 2020 under Hong Myung-bo , edging Persepolis 2–1.
The domestic cups fill in the rest: five League Cups spread from 1986 to 2011, a Super Cup in 2006, and a Korean FA Cup in 2017 — 16 major trophies in all.
When the club was founded on 6 December 1983, only the fourth professional side in the country, it played as Hyundai Horangi. Horangi is the Korean word for tiger, and the nickname outlasted the name.
