The Estádio Deusdeth Melo has seen more fans on the outside looking in than in the stands. The ground in Campo Maior closed its gates during a match that secured promotion for Comercial Atlético Clube, leaving supporters to watch from the perimeter.

This repair followed years of neglect, but it did not solve the underlying problem. The venue now sits in a state of suspended animation, eligible for matches but not for the people who come to watch them.

These images of unfinished work are not uncommon. The ground opened in 1947 and was named after the man credited with bringing football to the city, but the capacity is listed as 4,000, but nobody can fill it. The match day routine is different here; the players walk onto a pitch that is the only real thing in the place.
