Estadio Leonel Plácido
Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic
The stadium fell silent for a decade before the noise of machinery returned to Calle Hugo Kunhardt. The ground at number 57000 had been a patch of uneven natural grass, worn down by the sun and indifferent maintenance, until the Dominican government decided to clear the weeds and lay a flat sheet of green.
On 3 March 2024, the new surface was unveiled. The surface itself carries FIFA certification until 2027, a status that allows the ground to host international matches, though the club has yet to test that qualification.
It is not a grandstand but a hangar, a curved white structure with a high roof that shelters the seats from the coastal wind. It looks more like a warehouse than a sports venue, yet it forms the backdrop for the local teams.
Atlántico FC, founded in 2015, call this place home. The stadium is also used by the Puerto Plata Provincial Football Association, which organizes the lower leagues. There is no official site for the venue, and no former names to trace. It is simply Estadio Leonel Plácido, a concrete box with a new roof and a fresh surface, waiting for the next match to begin.
