Ponte Preta built this ground itself. In 1947 the club's supporters and directors, driven by Moisés Lucarelli, went out and gathered the materials by hand, down to the 250,000 bricks that went into the terraces. A year later, on 12 September 1948, it opened against XV de Piracicaba — and the home side lost 0-3, a start for a stadium that was, at the time, the third-largest in the country.

The record crowd belongs to a night against Santos and Pelé, 16 August 1970, when roughly 40,000 people packed in against an official count of 33,500. The stadium's own paid-attendance record came later, on 1 February 1978, when 34,985 paying fans watched Ponte Preta go down 1-3 to São Paulo, with total attendance put at 37,274.

What the Estádio Moisés Lucarelli has hosted, year after year, is the Campeonato Paulista and the Copa Paulista.
