When the ground opened here, Cali itself was celebrating: the stadium's first match was folded into the city's four-hundredth-anniversary programme, and President Alfonso López Pumarejo attended the inauguration. The pitch was christened not with a routine friendly but with an international tournament bringing in the national teams of Argentina, Cuba, Mexico and Colombia.
The ground first carried the plain name Estadio Departamental.
The pitch remains natural grass.
