The pavilion has never really been about the crowds. At 2,456 seats, it is too small for the kind of noise the main stadium makes, but that suits the indoor sports it hosts. The wooden parquet floor is standard. It is a tight fit, and the fans are close enough to touch the players.
It opened in 2004, built at the same time as the great stadium next door. The architect Damon Lavelle designed both, and while one is open to the sky, this one is a box. The concrete walls are thick. It replaced an older hall that had served the club for 37 years. The location on Avenida Eusébio da Silva Ferreira places it firmly in the Luz district.
The money has come for the hosts, but the players are still out there trying to prove themselves.
It is not a temple of football, but it is a place of work. It is a steady presence in a city that moves fast.
