Qatar beat Yemen 1:0 in the second group stage match of the Gulf Nations Cup on Saturday. The visitors took all three points from their trip to the Arabian Peninsula, closing out a result that should keep them in contention for qualification.
Y. Abdurisag broke the deadlock in the 64th minute, finishing a move that Qatar had been building all afternoon. The goal came after a period of sustained pressure, and here's the thing — it was the only shot on target that mattered. Yemen's goalkeeper had to make seven saves, most of them routine, but the final one was the crucial one.
Qatar dominated possession at 65 per cent and registered eight shots on target compared to Yemen's one. They created plenty of chances but big chances created stood at zero for both sides, which tells you about the quality of the chances on offer. To be fair, the heat took the sting out of it by the final quarter, and you could see the visitors managing the game rather than chasing it.
A. Afif had a penalty to win it in the 73rd minute but missed, and that was the moment the match truly settled. The hosts were out of sight by then, and a yellow card for H. Ghaleb in the 70th minute did little to change the complexion of things. Qatar substituted Afif himself in the 87th minute, allowing him to collect his own applause.
The result leaves Qatar in a strong position in Group 2. Yemen follow up their 4:0 defeat to the United Arab Emirates with another loss, while Qatar bounce back from their heavy 6:0 loss to Canada in June. The line has barely moved in terms of qualification, but the momentum is shifting.
