About the player
Attila Szalai played in the final when Fenerbahçe beat İstanbul Başakşehir 2–0 to win the 2022–23 Turkish Cup. He made 84 appearances for the club and scored six goals.
He left Hungary for the Rapid Wien academy in 2012, after youth spells at Göd, Vác and Vasas. He won the Austrian Youth League U16 title with Rapid and played 43 times for the second team. He made a single first-team appearance in 2015–16. Mezőkövesd gave him regular senior football back in Hungary.
His time at Hoffenheim was harder. Coach Pellegrino Matarazzo took him off at half-time in his first match, and playing time stayed scarce. Loans took him to SC Freiburg, Standard Liège and Kasımpaşa. He played fifteen times for Kasımpaşa.
Pogoń Szczecin took him on loan in January 2026, and he made 14 Ekstraklasa appearances with two assists. In July the club made the move permanent. He signed a contract until 30 June 2029, with an option for a further twelve months.
For Hungary, the left-footer made his debut against Uruguay on 15 November 2019. He has 53 caps and two goals. He played all three group matches at both Euro 2020 and Euro 2024. Before the senior side he went through the youth ranks, with 18 caps and two goals for the U21s.
