The Ekstraklasa operates as the top tier of the Polish football league system. Founded in 1926 when clubs broke away from the Polish Football Association to form an independent entity, the competition has undergone significant structural changes over its century-long history. For several decades, it was known simply as the 'I Liga' before adopting its current name in 2008. The league currently features 18 clubs playing a double round-robin format, a structure that returned in the 2021–22 season following a previous split-format era. This setup ensures each team plays 34 matches during the campaign.
Compared to the Puchar Polski, a knockout tournament with broader participation, the Ekstraklasa is defined by its league format and its direct path to European competition. The winner of the domestic league qualifies for the UEFA Champions League, whereas the Cup winner enters the UEFA Europa League. These two competitions are linked by the Polish Super Cup, contested between the respective winners. While the Puchar Polski allows for wider involvement, the Ekstraklasa remains the primary stage for the country's elite teams. The current champion is Lech Poznań, who secured the title in the 2025–26 season. Historically, Legia Warsaw holds the record for the most titles with 15, followed closely by Górnik Zabrze and Ruch Chorzów, who each have 14.
The promotion and relegation system involves three teams moving down to the I liga from the Ekstraklasa. In return, the top two teams from the I liga are promoted automatically. The third-place team in the second tier plays a two-legged playoff against the 14th-place team in the top flight to determine the final spot. This mechanism creates a competitive balance, ensuring that clubs like Cracovia Krakow, GKS Katowice, Jagiellonia, Korona Kielce, and Lech Poznan must maintain high performance levels to avoid the threat of relegation. The league’s structure prioritizes consistency and endurance over the short-term intensity of cup competitions.
