The Ekstraklasa title that year was the first championship in the club's history.

The club traces back to 18 June 1945, founded by settlers who had arrived in Gliwice from the area around Lwów in the postwar redrawing of Poland's borders. What followed was decades of renaming and merging that tracked the country's own upheavals: absorbing local works teams into Stal Gliwice, taking on names tied to military and industrial patrons under communist rule, folding in GKS Gliwice and KS Metal Gliwice in 1964. The club was even withdrawn from competition in 1993 before being reactivated in 1997.

Promotion back to the top flight came via the I liga title in 2011/12. In the Polish Cup, the club reached the final twice, in 1977/78 and 1982/83, losing both times, and a similar pattern held in 2019, when the Ekstraklasa triumph earned a place in the Super Cup final against Lechia Gdańsk, lost 1-3.

Home games are played at the Stadion Miejski im. Piotra Wieczorka, holding 9,736.
