Śląsk Wrocław

The ground on the edge of Wrocław holds 45,105 people. The name on it has changed with the sponsor, from Stadion Miejski to Stadion Wrocław to Tarczyński Arena Wrocław, while the tenant stayed the same.

That tenant spent half its life under army names. A predecessor, KS Pionier Wrocław, was formed in March 1946 and absorbed into a merger the same year; the club dates itself from 1947. Then came Legia Wrocław, then OWKS, then CWKS — five years in which the badge changed twice — before the army club settled in 1957 as WKS Śląsk Wrocław and kept that for four decades. The Śląsk part has outlasted everything bolted onto it.

Two league titles, thirty-five years apart. The first, in 1976–77, sat inside the club's strongest run: a Cup Winners' Cup quarter-final the season before, a Polish Cup in 1975–76, then the European Cup. Nothing since 1978–79 has gone further in Europe than a last-32 tie. The second title, in 2011–12, ended a barren spell that had lasted longer than most of the squad had been alive, and it arrived just as the new stadium opened.

A cup followed in 1986–87, and that is where the honours stop.

The derby that means most locally is the one with Zagłębie Lubin, forty miles up the road — Lower Silesia has two clubs of any size and they are these. The Wrocław derby against Gwardia belongs to another era of the city's football. Legia Warszawa is the older grudge: two army clubs, one capital, and a long argument about which of them the military ever really favoured.
